Biography:
Owen ‘Blakka’ Ellis is a writer, educator and performing artist.
He is the Director of Communication, PR and Research for Ellis International – a Jamaican entertainment production and talent management company that produces a range of theatrical productions, stand-up comedy events and television projects.
Ellis has written scripts for stage, screen and television, taught English and Literature in high schools, and has lectured in subjects ranging from writing, voice and speech and arts management to gender, community development and environmental awareness at Colleges in Jamaica and Canada. He is more popularly known however, for his over three decades of work as an actor/comedian starring in numerous plays and comedy events.
His film & TV credits include memorable appearances in Warner Brothers’ ‘Club Paradise’, ABC TV’s ‘Going to Extreme, Keystone Family Picture’s ‘Spymate’ and the Jamaican blockbuster ‘Dancehall Queen’. He has also performed live at venues all over the world either as a solo act or as part of the legendary Bello & Blakka comedy duo.
He writes a weekly column for the Jamaican STAR, has created lyrics and comedic materials for some of Jamaica’s top singers and comedians, and is a supervising writer for the popular Ity and Fancy Cat Show. He writes extensively on issues related to masculinity and gender relations and has published two books of poetry. His poetry also appears in major anthologies including ‘So Much Things to Say: 100 Poets from the first Ten Years of Calabash’ edited by Kwame Dawes and ‘In this Breadfruit Kingdom’ edited by Mervyn Morris.
Ellis studied Theatre Arts and Drama Education at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts and Social Work at the University of the West Indies. He has a Master in Environmental Studies [M.E.S.] degree from York University and has a deep interest in the intersection of gender, culture and environments.
