Biography:
René Simões was born on December 17, 1952 in a poor family of 11 children. His passion for soccer began right early in his childhood through the “peladas” (a game played just for fun) in Cavalcante, a district of Rio de Janeiro. As a result of this passion soon he turned to be a professional player of the São Cristóvão, a soccer team in Brazil. Meanwhile the coach career had also begun to drew his attention and his interest grew so irresistibly that he decided to graduate in physical education at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and his first job, now as a coach, took place in the Gymnastics Club of Rio de Janeiro, 1973.
Since then René has never stopped coaching either clubs (Fluminense, Coritiba, Vitoria, Flamengo, Vasco, Botafogo, Al Arabi Sports, Al Ryan Sports, Al Khor Sports Club and Vitória de Guimarães de Portugal) or national soccer teams of countries like Jamaica, Iran, Trinidad & Tobago, Costa Rica and the Brazil women’s and men’s U-17, U-20 and U-23. He has been a member of the FIFA’s Panel of Coaches since 2000 and the CBF’s Panel of Coach Course Instructor since 2015. René is the only person in the world that has ever coached men’s and women’s teams in FIFA competitions. He was commended in 1998 with the medal of the Order of Rio Branco by the President of Brazil, Fernando Henrique Cardoso, and by the Government of Jamaica, in 2000, with the medal “Commander Indestintion”.
